Memories of Forgetting - Erinnerungen an das Vergessen

This multi-sensory performance was developed in collaboration with lay participants of various ages over a two-month period of performative research. The goal was to uncover connections among their diverse historical experiences, their unique ways of remembering through their senses, and the perspectives of objects that hold memories. This exploration aimed to enhance our understanding of how and why we remember and forget.

What stories do you tell about yourself? What do you remember, and what has long been forgotten? Can we, together, recall the past through our senses—smell, taste, and sound?

Nine performers, whose stories began between the 1940s and the 1990s, delve into their memories and search the darkness for forgotten, faded, and hidden traces of their pasts. In this exploration, they discover which memories hold significance and which ones they would prefer to forget. They investigate when forgetting becomes a deliberate act and a means of power. Along the way, they also explore the perspectives of the things around them.
